Mathematics is a reasoning and creative activity employing abstraction and generalisation to identify, describe and apply patterns and relationships. The knowledge, skills and understanding of Mathematics extend beyond the classroom into other disciplines, and prepare students for life in the 21st Century.
At Tenterfield High School, Mathematics focuses on developing increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, communication, logical reasoning, analytical thought, and problem-solving skills. Our students successfully participate in the Commonwealth Bank Australian Mathematics Competition and make regular visits to the University of New England to compete in state mathematical challenges. Our QuickSmart program assists students in refining their automaticity skills.
Stage 4 and Stage 5 Mathematics explores Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. In Stage 6, these areas provide students with the understanding and knowledge necessary to choose between Mathematics General, Mathematics (2 Unit), Mathematics Extension 1 (3 Unit) and Mathematics Extension 2 (4 Unit), depending upon their ability, and their aspirations for future employment or further tertiary study.
